What Is GS1 Digital Link?
Definition
GS1 Digital Link is a GS1 standard that expresses a GTIN as a standard web URL. This way the same barcode can be used both to identify the product at checkout and to point to a web page.
While a classic EAN-13 carries only a 13-digit number, GS1 Digital Link places that number inside a link; that link can be printed as a QR code. The result is a single code that serves both machines and humans.
To check a GTIN's validity, use the GTIN validator.
Difference from a classic barcode
In the traditional approach, a product might carry an EAN-13 for checkout and a separate QR code for marketing. GS1 Digital Link merges the two: a single 2D code carries the GTIN and also points to a web address.
This reduces the number of barcodes on packaging and offers consumers a rich digital experience (product info, recipes, warranty, freshness). Because the same code still contains a standard GTIN under the hood, it can stay compatible with existing inventory systems.
In short, the difference is that a single code serves both the "identity" and "link" roles together.
What it looks like
GS1 Digital Link is expressed with a path structure like /01/09506000134352 after a domain; here 01 is the GTIN's AI and the number after it is the GTIN value. Extra fields like lot or serial number can also be added to the same URL.
This URL is encoded as a QR code and, when scanned by phone, opens the relevant web experience; at the same time a scanner can extract the GTIN from this structure.
If you want to generate QR codes for your own content, use the QR code generator.
Why it matters: the shift to 2D
Retail is undergoing a major shift from classic 1D barcodes to 2D barcodes (especially QR). The goal is a single code that reads at checkout but also offers a link to the consumer becoming standard.
This shift opens new possibilities in freshness and recall management, anti-counterfeiting and consumer engagement. The GS1 Sunrise 2027 initiative is a roadmap aiming for retail checkouts to also accept 2D barcodes.
It is a coordinated goal to get the industry ready for 2D barcodes, rather than a hard deadline.
Limits and caution
To fully benefit from GS1 Digital Link, you need a real, registered GTIN, obtained by applying to GS1. This site does not assign official GTINs and does not provide you with Digital Link infrastructure.
A QR code being in GS1 Digital Link format does not prove the product behind it is real or registered; the code is still just a carrier. The validity of the GTIN inside is a separate check.
